A Visit to HeartMath
As many poets have said for eons, the heart appears to be the main access point to the wisdom of a higher self, to what we call heart intuition.
—dr. rollin mccraty
As I began my Transcendental Meditation practice, my life slowly started to shift. I was becoming less erratic and more stable. I had a much deeper sense of awareness around me, personally, socially, and professionally. For one thing, I had a deep sense of an awakening, a feeling of my inner self expanding. I was also clearly falling in love with my girlfriend, Britta. I had just returned from a retreat up in Mayacamas Ranch with one hundred spiritual like-minded leaders. At the conference, I met up with social entrepreneur Terry Mollner, who coincidentally also lived in Amherst. He was smiling as I began explaining my inner journey and this new sense of being that I found through my newly found Transcendental Meditation practice. At that moment, I was like a kid in a candy store learning about the various forms of meditation, mantras, and techniques that exist in the world—Hindi, Indian, Jewish, Arabic, Native Indian traditions. He was keenly aware of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and mentioned that he had heard him speak for the first time when he visited Amherst College in 1973. Maharishi talked then about this expansion of the mind during mediation, and this new sense of awe, a new sense of being.
As we walked out on the patio, looking over the horizon in the Mayacamas Mountain Valley, he asked if I was familiar with an organization called HeartMath. He thought they would be helpful in my expansion of learning about different forms of meditation, one of them being the heart. He mentioned that the Scientific Journal recently published a new article about the HeartMath Institute, stating, “The heart may be more powerful than the brain.” He thought it would be inspirational and life changing for me to meet two of the founders of the organization, Dr. Rollin McCraty and Dr. Deborah Rozman, up at the Institute in the Santa Cruz mountains. There has always been something soothing about the Santa Cruz landscape, and the suggestion seemed fortuitous, so I took him up on the offer.
It felt like just another road trip. I woke to the beautiful blue ocean in Marina del Rey. My relationship with Britta was beginning to bloom, and she was also curious about this HeartMath Institute, encouraging me to head up north to Santa Cruz to visit. Along the way up the Big Sur coastline, I looked over the most breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. My heart was pounding. I was in love. It took about an hour to finally get up the mountain and arrive at the HeartMath Institute. Rollin was a happy older gentlemen, who looked to me like the movie star Will Ferrell, though a bit nerdier. We walked into the lab together, where I observed a wire contraption with computer monitors stationed throughout. It felt like we were entering a deep space nine probe.
